I'm so inspired by this. I've known a couple people who talked about dumpster diving in Toronto but I pictured them getting a bag of day-old bagels. I never imagined that such a variety and quantity of food might be available.
I'm definitely going to scout out a few of my local grocery stores to see what I can find!
Shockingly, my mother was a Freegan 40 years ago, only it was not exactly something I was proud of. She gave me a pair of really nice Nike tennis shoes when I was about 18, I could never have afforded them. I found out about a month later, they were out of the dumpster from behind a shoe store. A few years later she gave me a handful of books I had wished I could afford to buy. She had been dumpster diving behind a bookstore. At the time I was embarassed, now I see her point.
My mother even went so far as to get as much as she could from dumpsters and then had yard sales to pay her bills whenever she was out of work.
I am now trying to live a more frugal life and am not repulsed by what she did. I guess it takes time and seeing the worlds exploitation before you can really come to an understanding of how our consumerism can have such a mass effect on our environment.

I find it incredible that these kind of iniciatives are springing in the most consumer-oriented country in the world.
Its conforting to know some people are acting-reacting about it.
It would be better, however, if an official public policy on reducing consumerism were created. But that, I think, won´t happen in a few decades.
